Create a Favicon with Photoshop

By Yorgo Nestoridis

Create a Favicon with Photoshop

While you are working on your image or brand, you may want to create your custom favicon which will display in your visitors browser tabs as a small image.

Here is how to create your favicon.

Create your Favicon

Before you start, you need to add a plug-in to your Photoshop to allow saving your image in .ico format.

1. Download the plug-in from here.

2. Unzip and extract the files.

3. Load the file ICOFormat.8bi into your Photoshop plug-ins folder. (This is typically in drive C under Programm Files – Adobe – Photoshop CS4 – Plug-ins)

4. Fire up your Photoshop and create a new image with size 64×64 pixels (the icon will be saved as 16×16 pixels but it’s easier to create on a bigger format).

Favicon Design 64×64

Favicon Icon 16×16

When resizing the image from 64 pixels to 16 pixels, resample the image with ‘Bicubic Sharper’.

5. ‘Save as’ and select the .ico format.

6. Place the image as ‘favicon.ico’ into the root folder of your domain and add the link to the header script of your site.

Done.

Page Curl by Photoshop Ycademy

After two weeks of solid basic Photoshop trainings, we are ready to take things a step further by using more or less sophisticated plug-ins.

A typical sample is here below: we have been using two different page curl plug-ins: an old and a new one. They both do equally a great job.

Photoshop Ycademy

When 10 days ago we started the Photoshop Ycademy for YORGOO and Ycademy members, the program outline looked like a huge task. Today we see, how much can be accomplished within little time by ordinary people making extraordinary efforts. Tonight’s training will be a clean up session to finish up with some basics and the implementation of more action scripts, namely to accomplish more day to day tasks.

Book Covers, CDs, DVDs and more

Last night’s session was dedicated to product wrappers; it’s all about the look! Great stuff was created and I am looking forward to see some of it on Google Top 10 Images. While we have shared with participants some impressive actions, we are preparing two Photoshop Packs containing some interesting stuff I have on my computer and which I find useful for professional use of Photoshop. Here below a gallery of some sample images I did in just a few minutes; hope you enjoy! See you tonight at 7 pm London at Yorgotalk!

Yorgo Nestoridis New Semiomantics Website

Yorgo Nestoridis New Semiomantics Website

You may wonder why I change my website … again. As my site serves as a prototype and sandbox for new Semiomantics developments, I need to adjust some design features to anticipate WordPress 3.0 features as well as to experiment with advanced media handlers.

Also, and this is not a joke, I am no longer happy with the performance, since I have built into our recent customer sites a device which outperforms my own script and which cannot run on the present framework.

The Look of Semiomantics

The look of my personal site will not change substantially; it will be essentially black and gray on white with some rare and mostly invisible touches of red or blue.

The main change concerns the Home Page which will follow the trend of our recent WP Best developments: short page with just a few highlights and a dominant featured image leading to an important editorial.

From a design point of view, I will keep it minimalistic as usual in order to put the content into the center of the development, as you can see from the screen-shot below, where the image of Vouliagmeni is the visual center of attraction.

Yorgo Nestoridis New Semiomantics Site

The Fonts and Colors

I will play with different font combination and redesign my labels and banners using professional fonts on photoshop. As the site is extensively widgetized, there are about 15 places where labels and banners can be placed, right into the framework. Using different sets of banners and labels, designed in different styles, the site can change face with just a few mouseclicks without the need to touch anything which impacts on the performance.

While the site will remain in the black to white scale with some touches of red or blue, the banners and labels will fit in like skin elements while still being utilities.

For the time being I am still loading script elements. Tomorrow I will take care of the front page content.

See you then.

Professional Presentation of your e-products

The presentation is of the utmost importance when you sell a product. Creating clean wrappers and marketing materials is a must. Today’s screens render images with a high resolution. For this reason you won’t get away with images from second zone. The same applies to marketing materials.

Photoshop quality is a must.

At Ycademy we will this week dig into an important application of Photoshop: create Book covers and Jewel cases with Photoshop to present your digital products.

Please find here below two examples of the quality you will be able to produce after this weeks trainings. To keep white clean is the most difficult task; the samples below demonstrate quality, even if you look at them with the magnifier.

The Ycademy Trainings

Sure, we will show you step by step how to create a book cover right from scratch using your Photoshop skills. But there is no reason inventing the wheel; we will focus on learning how to use one of the most popular plugins to create efficiently professional looking wrappers. For this reason we have prepared two packs of commercial action scripts for Photoshop which you may grab for as long as available.

Check it out at the YORGOO Pro Shop.
